DEVELOPMENT

As frustrating as it is, we are still waiting on Development Approval but we understand a decision could come any week now. When it does, we are ready. Our temporary greens are a couple of cuts away from being playable, contracts and work schedules are ready to go for when we get the green light.

NEW GOLF CARTS have been ordered from ClubCar and will be delivered once they arrive from the USA. They will be equipped with all the latest technology including on board screens for course information, distance mapping etc. We have decided to again lease the carts over a five-year period, which best suits our business model.

BEER PRICE INCREASE

As I forecast last month, unfortunately we have been hit with another beer increase and have had to pass on 20 cents per schooner on members prices. We’ve had a look at other venues in the area and will still remain competitive and in many cases, cheaper.

NEW PATHS ON 15TH

The new path along the 15th hole has been completed with minimal disruption to play. This is the latest step in our commitment to ‘water-proof the course’ and allow carts out during wet weather and more importantly to get course machinery from one end of the course to the other avoiding the significant damage that we’ve seen from heavy mowers etc in the past. The vision is to eventually link up all paths with the ones that will be built as part of the development works.

The material we are using is called Slag Cement which is a by-product from blast furnaces that are used to make iron. Slag is 17 percent stronger than traditional concrete and is highly sought in construction because of its strength, cost and longevity. It is less likely to move or crack on a clay base such as in our course.

DAMAGED NETTING

The damage to the 1st hole netting has been repaired and our insurance company is assessing our claim to also cover damage to the 13th nets. The added complexity for the 13th is the number of trees and neighbouring properties along the fence line. Anyway, once we get the go ahead from the insurance company, we’ll leave it to the experts as to how they will carry out the repairs. We’ll keep you informed about any changes but most probably the good old Lake Johnson spare hole will get another run during repairs.

Thanks again to our playing members for your patience and understanding. We are juggling a number of challenges at the moment, but rest assured we are on top of the issues and doing the best anyone can to maintain our top-quality course.

Happy March to you all. We are now well and truly into the New Year and great golf continues through all the grades.

Winners for March were as follows:

A Grade Medal – Jarred Madeline (8) 64

B Grade Medal – Kevin Hyeong (16) 68

C Grade Medal – Lachlan Roser (31) 65

The March monthly Medal was also the qualifying event for this year’s Match Play championship! After much discussion at Board level, it was decided to make the match play a standalone event in the hope of having greater participation numbers. Judging from the number of players on the day, I think we got it right. The new format now has 64 players spread across the four divisions vying for the opportunity to be crowned ‘Match play Champion’.

Holroyd Shield Winner is Luke Bagatella (17) 65

Cumberland Bowl Winner is Yin Onn Yap (13) 68

Presentation of these two awards will be made at 5pm next Saturday.

Congratulations to you all!

The Major Pennant team have now concluded their season finishing third in their section. Congratulations to the players and caddies for their efforts. A big thank you goes out to all the supporters who gave up their time to come out and encourage the team.

Our Master Pennant team will commence their season on May 18. Nominations for the team will go up the Club House soon with team selection to be announced shortly after that.

Round 2 of the Challenge Cup will be held on the 29th. Good luck to all players as we move forward. Registration is still open for the event for those of you who may have missed the opportunity last month.

For the month of February our scoring app usage was 88% amongst the membership. Thank you to all who have embraced our new technology!

Notables

· The late summer weather has been splendid, and with the course receiving 38 mm of rain during the month,

· Course renovation will commence 31 March, the course will be closed for two (2) days 31/3 & 01/04.

. The temporary greens are shaping up in readiness for play. Mowing has been reduced to 4.5mm.

Course Enabling Works

In a staged program, construction will begin with the new creek on 2, followed by works on the existing 4th & 5th holes and then moving to works at the 9th & 18th holes. These examples are shown on the corflute boards on display in the Clubhouse.

Thank you for your continued support as we enhance our course for the future. Stay tuned for more details as we move forward with this exciting development!

Did you know

· A typical 18 hole golf course produces enough oxygen to support upwards of 4000 people.

· The USA has 16000 golf courses which is more golf courses than McDonalds or Starbucks.

· Australia has 1800 golf courses and 9 of them are in the top 100 courses in the world, we only have 1032 McDonald restaurants.

· Kennett Country Cub in Missouri shares its 15th tee with a McDonalds, that’s a new twist on Drive Thru.

Lastly, I would like to acknowledge Fred Daoud who has undertaken the difficult task of marking the fairway sprinkler heads with measurement to the centre of the green. Thank you.

LADIES PRESIDENT REPORT

Since we returned to our official summer golf season the weather gods have not been particularly friendly, delivering some very hot and humid days as well as, especially over the last two weeks rain!!

However, this did not deter a lot of our ladies who managed to produce, under the circumstances, some very impressive scores. Well done.

Our pennant teams have also been out and about giving their all representing Cumberland. I’m sure Captain Tracey will fill in more details.

Next Tuesday we will be accommodating a large number of ladies from Muirfield who will join our comp, as the Muirfield course will be closed for maintenance. It will be a big field.

Tuesday 18th will be our St Patrick’s day, so expect to see lots of green outfits on the course.

Our first open day, The Easter Open will be Tuesday 15th April.  As we head towards Easter, I hope we get to enjoy some typical Easter weather, coolish mornings and evenings with pleasantly comfortable temperatures in-between.

Enjoy your golf, our course and each other.

Lady President

LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT

A very busy month ahead for our ladies golf and pennants. On Tuesday 11/3 we will be hosting 44 ladies from Muirfield GC whilst their course is closed for maintenance. With Muirfield returning the favour for our ladies on 1/4/25 when our course is closed. Then we host the final round and presentation for GolfNSW Womens’ Division 4 Grade Pennant on Friday 21/3, and the following Friday 28/3 we host the final round and presentation for the Western Districts 1 Shield.

Our ladies Grade team has been giving it their all but has come up against some tough opponents this year and has been struggling to battle the traffic and early Friday morning hit offs at Woolooware, Moore Park and Mona Vale.

With Penrith and lastly Cumberland rounds still to play, the girls are looking forward to travelling a lot closer to home for the tail end of the competition. Good luck ladies!

The Western Districts 1 team are enjoying the Interclub competition again this year and have scored great wins at Oak Point, Stonecutters and Massey Park. With rounds at Cabramatta, Carnarvon and Brighton Lakes still to play the team is out in front of the competition. Keep it up ladies! Well done!

Congratulations to the 2Ball Knockout competition winners for 2025 Soon Lee and Jinny Jeon, who defeated Lucia Kim and Kelly Yoo on the 20th hole! A hard fought match all the way!

Good golfing!
