November ENews

CHANGE OF CLUB CAPTAIN:
Our Club Captain, Darren Stocks has reluctantly tendered his resignation from the Board. Darren and his family recently relocated to the Lake Macquarie area and he has found it increasingly difficult, with travel and work commitments, to meet his obligations as Club Captain. We wish Darren well for the future and thank him for his considerable contribution to Cumberland as a Member, Director and Captain.
As a result, the Board has (under rule 35.3 of the Constitution) installed our current Director Shannon Bridger as Club Captain.

Shannon has a solid golfing background starting as a Junior at Richmond. He has professional experience in Horticulture and Sports Club management. He has managed and mentored our junior teams, holds the director porfolio for junior development and has represented our club as the Captain and Manager of the Major Pennant Team.

DEVELOPMENT:
The Golf Course Enabling Works Tenders have closed and will now be assessed by our Committee of Vice Captain, CEO, Course Super and our Course Architect Scott from Harrison Golf. There has been a lot of interest in tendering for the works so we expect it will be a competitive field. Meanwhile we are still waiting on a decision by the Dept. of Planning regarding our DA.Our development partners Pariter will be hosting an information evening on Thursday 21st November for those interested in the new retirement living apartments coming to Cumberland. Shouldd any member want to attend, please register your interest via the link below or the QR codes located around the Club.

Junior Pennants
I’d like to acknowledge the Junior pennant series currently underway, the juniors commenced their 2024 campaign with a win at Roseville against a formable opponent Pennant Hills. The following two weekend have seen unfavourable results however the team has truly fought hard, and another win is on the horizon. With two weeks left in the campaign the team will play at Campbelltown this weekend and have a bye for the final round. In watching the team compete, we are proud of both the sportsmanship and etiquette the team has displayed.

The course is holding up well considering the number of rounds being played. In September the course carried 3400 rounds of competition golf or more simply that is an average field size of 170 per competition. Add in member’s social rounds and social golf, the course sustains over 5000 rounds played per month.

During November, the green staff will be undertaking the following programmed works:
· Fairways to be verti cut (the process of using a lawn verticutter to remove thatch being the spongy layer of living and dead plant matter between turf and the soil, enabling effective use of fertilizers to improve the soil base as well as numerous other benefits.
· Temporary greens mow height has been reduced to 8mm and they have been top dressed to level out the surface.

With the upcoming summer, the fairways and greens dry out impacting the plant leaf which results in it becoming brittle and prone to damage from foot traffic, mowing and play. We will also see the grass browning and thinning which enables weeds and pest infestation to establish a presence which thrive in the day.
